Bahraini Dinar BHD history
The currency of Bahrain is known as Bahrain Dinar.  The ISO 4217 currency code is BHD. 1000 fils makes one Dinar.  The dinar came in to existence in 1965, when it replaced the gulf rupee at the rate of 1 dinar being equal to 10 rupees.

The Bahrain Dinar is abbreviated as BD.  Coins were introduced in the values of 1, 5, 10, 25, 50 and 100 fils.  The 1 and 50 fils were minted in bronze while others were minted in cupro-nickel. The 1 fil coins are not produced since 1966 any longer and it is not in circulation anymore. Bimetallic 100 and 500 fils were set in to circulation in 2000.

The Bahrain Currency Board introduced notes in values of 100 fils, ¼, ½, 1, 5 and 10 dinar in 1965.  The Bahrain Monetary Agency, which was renamed as the Central Bank in 2006 took over the role of issuing notes for ½, 1, 5, 10 and 20 dinar in 1973 and they continue to deciding on issuing currency notes.

The Bahrain dinar was pegged to the International Monetary Fund with Special Drawing rights in December 1980.  The Bahrain dinar is different from the UAE Dinar and it is the current currency in circulation in Bahrain.
